Bad lighting fix: control direction before brightness.

A desk can feel dim while the screen still shows a distracting reflection. More brightness does not automatically solve either problem. Treat the room, the work surface, and the display as three different lighting zones. First identify where light comes from and what it strikes; then decide whether the fix is repositioning, diffusion, task light, or room light.
Map the room at the times you work
Observe the desk in the morning, midday, and evening if those periods are part of the schedule. Record direct sun, bright windows, overhead fixtures, wall reflections, and the shadow cast by your writing hand. Turn the display off briefly; its dark surface makes reflected windows and lamps easier to locate.
Do not judge the plan from one time of day. A desk that works under morning light may receive low-angle sun later, while an evening room may leave the bright display as the dominant visible source. Window coverings, desk orientation, and movable lighting can support these different modes without forcing one fixed brightness level.
Remove direct glare at the source
If a window or bare lamp is visible in the screen, change the angle between the source, display, and seated position. Rotate or move the desk when possible, adjust the display within its supported range, or use a suitable shade or diffuser. Avoid placing a strong point source directly behind the screen or directly behind the normal viewing position.
Clean the display using the manufacturer's instructions before judging reflections; smudges can scatter light. Check glossy desk surfaces, framed art, and light-colored walls as secondary sources. A lower-output lamp aimed well can be more useful than a brighter lamp aimed into the display or the user's line of sight.
Build two adjustable layers
Room layer
Use general room light to make the surrounding area visible and avoid an extreme contrast between the display and the room. Indirect light bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling can spread illumination, but the fixture and surface must be appropriate for that use. Keep lamps clear of fabrics and other materials as directed by their makers.
Task layer
Aim task light at paper, keyboard, or detailed hand work rather than the screen. Place it on the side opposite the writing hand when that reduces hand shadows, then adjust for the real task. A movable arm or head is useful only if it can hold position and fit the desk without colliding with a monitor, shelf, or camera.
Choose a form that fits the desk
- Base lamp: easy to reposition, but its footprint must leave the keyboard, mouse, and paper zones clear.
- Clamp lamp: saves surface area, but needs a compatible edge thickness, shape, material, and clear underside.
- Monitor-mounted light: can preserve desk space, but must fit the display geometry and should not block cameras, sensors, controls, or ventilation.
- Floor lamp: keeps hardware off the desk, but needs a stable location outside chair, door, and cable paths.
Check the fixture's electrical rating, included power equipment, controls, dimensions, mounting limits, and replacement requirements. Color and brightness controls can help different tasks, but they do not compensate for bad placement. Product output descriptions also may not be directly comparable when measurement methods differ.
Adjust the display after the room
Use the operating system or monitor controls to select a level that works with the room rather than leaving the display at a fixed extreme. Review manufacturer guidance for automatic brightness, color modes, and any scheduled display settings. For color-critical work, follow the requirements of that workflow rather than a general home-office preset.
A light placed on or behind a display must not cover ventilation, controls, cameras, or sensors. Make sure its cable does not pull when the display moves. If a monitor arm is involved, include the added item in the total load and follow the arm and monitor instructions.
Run a reversible lighting trial
- Move existing lamps and change desk orientation before purchasing equipment.
- Test reading on screen, writing on paper, keyboard use, and a video call.
- Repeat at each important time of day.
- Check the display for reflections from the seated position and during calls.
- Confirm that controls are reachable and cables do not cross walking or chair paths.
